Care
Partner of the Month
Sherone
M. Mayes
Chicago, IL
The
road this lady has chosen to travel may not be seem like the most
convenient one, but she is a living testament that the greatest rewards
are in giving, not receiving. We honor her loving spirit and beautiful
sense of selflessness.
Sherone says:
"Although it
has not been an easy task to care for a stroke survivor, I've found
the strength in God. My thought has always been, "How do I want
to be treated if something were to happen to me?". God has given
me the gift of Compassion, therefore I use that gift every chance
I get. That is why it has been easier for me to care for Andrew Williams,
the step-grandfather of my 9-year old son.
Andrew has been a stroke survivor for a little over 2 years now and
I can remember the very first time I saw him after having the stroke.
I visited him at the rehabilitation facility with his only daughter,
who lives out of town. He was very glad to see both of us, he was
able to talk and comprehend our conversations very well. He was beginning
to feed him self soft foods only. He is a very independent person
and was feeling quite spunky and really did not want us to do anything
for him.
When Andrew first came home the summer of 2004, his wife hired a caretaker
to look after him 3 days a week while she went to work. Andrew was
very angry and really did not want the lady to help him. He told us
that he could do a better job watching his self than she could. This
showed that he was in denial and thought the he could actually care
for himself. The lady only stayed with him for 2 months before his
wife let her go.
