A New Life: Stroke Rehabilitation
Stroke can be a life-changing
event, in more ways than one could ever predict. The amount of change
is definitely dependent on the severity of the stroke. The rehabilitation
process is one that is focused on how stroke has changed a person
and revolves around adaptation to these changes. The goal of rehabilitation
is improving function that allows one to have the best quality of
life that can be achieved.
Stroke survivors will
have varying degrees of impairments based on the severity of the
stroke. For example, some stroke survivors may be able to walk but
have significant difficulty using their hands, while others may
be unable to walk, with limited ability to speak or swallow. There
is certainly a wide spectrum of stroke survivors and likewise, there
is a spectrum of rehabilitation. The various settings for rehabilitation
to take place include, in-hospital, outpatient, and in-home. The
rehabilitation team is comprised of a physiatrist (the rehab physician),
therapists, nurses, psychologist, social worker, and discharge planner.
Each team member would work with the survivor and family, with the
goal of restoring as much independence as possible.
The key to understanding
life after stroke is that it will be challenging. It can be a life-long
process that can be overwhelming for the survivor and the family/care
partner. The rehabilitation team is there for the support, emotionally
and physically, of both the survivor and care partners. Stay encouraged
and believe in yourself.
