Survivor of the Month

Saundra L. Barnes
New York, New York
My
work is not done, I continue to have falling episodes due to my equilibrium
being off balance because there are still residual effects from the
stroke today. At times my speech is somewhat sluggish and slurred
and I must force myself to work harder in enunciating so that I may
be understood. I strive to overcome these shortcomings. Then there
is the continuous battle with my many degrees of depression that every
waking day I must struggle with keeping the feeling of hopelessness
at bay.
I have been dissatisfied with my medical treatment since my discharge
from the hospital. The feeling that the quality of one's life is truly
not worth very much once one is labeled with an illness has affected
me. However, I have a new lease on life these days since my exposure
and involvement with the Stroke of Hope Foundation. I now feel
that there is hope and that I am not alone because this is the beginning
of the rest of my life.
