Stroke
Survivor of the Month
- March/April
2005

Mica L. Wright-Burton
(with son, Philip)
Harvey, IL
Stroke
affects every person in a different way. Factors that cause the situation
to vary include the location of the stroke, length of time prior to
proper diagnosis and intervention as well as the general condition
of the individual. This Survivor was fortunate enough to get the needed
attention in time to allow her a speedy recovery. It's encouraging
to know that there are stories that end with "happily
ever after".
Mica says:
"Im a Stroke Survivor! July 24, 2003 was my life-changing
day. A young vibrant mother at the age of 32 fought her battle with
Stroke. I can truly say that I am a walking, talking, praying miracle
of faith. Yes, my family, friends and doctors were and are very supportive
but
I give all the glory, honor and praise to God!
The stroke initially had me motionless, speechless and unresponsive.
My family and friends were in dismay. Day by day the issues slowly
resolved. Short-term memory seemed to be the major residual effect.
The in-patient rehabilitation started soon after the doctors considered
me to be stable. Rehabilitation included: Cognitive, Physical and
Occupational Therapies. I continued out-patient therapy at another
rehabilitation institute. My family was instructed to provide me with
24-hour supervision and make sure I took my medication as scheduled.
Finally, after weeks of therapy and a follow-up visit with my neurologist,
I was released to resume all activities. Activities included being
without 24-hour supervision and living in my own home, to be an active
mother again, to drive and return to work. I was overwhelmed with
joy. I could get back to being me again!
The rest of 2003 was full of beautiful surprises. My doctor wrote
and published an article in a medical journal regarding my case. I
was engaged in November and married December 27, 2003. There
is Life after Stroke!"
