Stroke Survivor of the Month - May/June 2004
page 2
Edna Marie Woodson
Mount Vernon, NY

But this one is special. She's a seasoned veteran. She's weathered storms that some of us know nothing about. She trusts. She's unafraid. Even though her speech is broken from severe aphasia and can only be understood in spurts, everything she doesn't say is clear. Her self-confidence says, "I'm trying to get better - but accept me as I am." I've never seen her stand. My understanding is that she can stand and walk with assistance. She would have you believe she's ready to get up and walk right now. Her spirit is what gives motivation. First, you must believe, then you can achieve.

I found Edna to be particularly warm and loving. She's like a relative you've known for years but as innocent as a child. She's not so focused on what the stroke took away as much as how much she's gaining a little more all the time. Her days aren't filled with projects and timelines, but with trials and errors with her husband at her side. So she won't get docked for the errors, she'll get rewarded for the trials. She's tenacious and determined - she's a survivor."
